Island getaway walk!

What a walk!

Friend and cycle-fit instructor Tony hosted a wonderful Toronto Islands walk for us, Sunday, June 15. An amazing day: walking, talking, hearing the history and mystery of the Islands. We enjoyed sun, beach, forest, flowers, a kids’ garden, a bit of wildlife, lake, ponds, lagoons, multiple islands, a haunted lighthouse, a beautiful neighbourhood of island homes and… a strawberry social! Lucky for us: the weather was perfect.

We arrived at the ferry docks early and shipped over to Hanlan’s Point. Arrived at 10:30 and found that Sunday mornings are quiet, there. Ideal for walking. We then headed east to see beaches, trees, historic and municipal structures, sculptures and more. We crossed the middle of Centre Island and ended our group date with a relaxed sandwich-and-strawberry-shortcake luncheon at St.-Andrew-By-The-Lake church: an outdoor treat and music, under the trees. A few of us lingered and walked along some of the boardwalk and around Ward’s Island a bit, taking a later ferry home. What a great day, with excellent company.

I promised to share a few photos of our journey. Roll over for captions, or click on any photo for slideshow version:

Tony suggests we take an autumn walk to continue the tour. Who’s up for that? I’m already considering what to bring for the picnic.

Care to join us? We meet at the Toronto College Street West End YMCA each Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. and head out on foot for wonderful conversation, fresh air and walking, often right in our west end Toronto neighbourhood. We welcome Y-members and non-members, too.

We usually walk for 90 minutes to two hours, and cover between six to ten kilometres. (Not to mention covering all sorts of interesting topics, and seeing intriguing architecture, businesses, parks, sculpture, dog-walkers, store windows, quiet streets, blooming or greening plant life, the changing clouds in the sky and, sometimes, even other walkers!)

All are welcome. Wear comfortable shoes. Bring water. If it’s hot, put on sunscreen and grab your hat. Walks vary in length, challenge, destination and speed. And weather! We walk all year long, rain or shine. So can you!

We occasionally revise start-time, or choose a destination which requires TTC fare. Sometimes we venture further by transit, and return to the Y on foot. Once in a while, we go for a reasonably priced brunch. FOLLOW this blog to hear about our adventures. But I don’t post our walking routes here in advance. So feel free to get in touch if you want to receive our weekly emailed newsletter with that Sunday’s walk plan.

Hope to see you soon! Great walks ahead!
