Happy Anniversary, again!

Let’s celebrate two years of walking together, with a return visit to our favourite islands!
But first, about last week:

Update:

It was another very, very (very) hot Sunday, but we were slathered with sunscreen and feeling brave. Off we went to visit the Pedestrian Sunday version of Kensington Market. It’s terrific to have elbow room and cheery company – walking up and down the busy, car-free, colourful streets. There was so much to see, share, admire, watch, sip and taste, that we really ran out of time. I’d love to do this again for the September or October dates (last Sunday of each month, until then). Let me know which you’d prefer. Hopefully then we’ll see more of the visiting artists… and taste a few more delicacies! But this week, we had absolutely no complaints about the music, dancers, whip-wielder, iced coffee, lobster rolls, little cheese and tomato samples and, later, the nice cool sorbet float and tartuffo that a couple of us enjoyed in the (ahhh!) air-conditioned comfort of Sicilian Ice Cream, on the walk home (thank you, Barbara!). No slouches, we walked a total of 10.3 km. Nice!

And this week, on August 2, 2015:

We’re finally going back to the Islands! There is a budget for this walk: return transit fare (at whatever your rate, or with your MetroPass), and return ferry cost (that is, $7.25, or $4.75 senior). Meet at the Y at 9:00 a.m., as usual. We’ll take the streetcar over to Bay Street, and the Bay bus right to the ferry docks. Our ferry to Hanlan’s Point leaves at 10:15, so we won’t need to rush. We’ll still get across the bay early enough to beat the crowds.

Let’s walk along paths, beaches and boardwalk, past Gibraltar Point, through Centre Island and to Ward’s Island. There will something a-MAZE-ing to explore on the way. And we’ll stop somewhere shady for a picnic lunch.

Bring an easily carried lunch, as we may not be near “shopping” when it’s time to have a snack! Bring water, sunhat, parasol and extra sunscreen. It’s going to be another warm weekend. I plan to bring a small towel, in case we decide that walking right in the surf on the beach is refreshing. I think it will be hard to resist that, and I hate putting hiking boots back on over sandy feet.

This weekend is the Ward’s Island Gala event. I don’t have official information about the schedule (there’s nothing online for this year’s plans, as far as I can see, but Tony tells me it is happening). This anniversary Gala seems to be mostly for local Ward’s Islanders, but if we happen upon it, and if they happen to have cool beverages, I shan’t complain. 🙂

Departure time may vary, depending upon how many are in the group, and who wants to leave, when. I’ll have the ferry schedule with me, and we’ll be flexible. Expect this day to get you home by 2:00 or 3:00 p.m., at the earliest. Later, if you want to dawdle. (And what better place to dawdle?) We’ll call this a long walk! Shorter walk, next week.

As always, please feel free to bring a friend. Or two! Share this info with them, so they’re prepared for the day (times, travel costs, lunch, etc.). If you prefer to get there on your own, you can meet us at the docks, or even on the Island. Just get in touch to let me know your plan, so we can watch for you.

This will be a real celebration of summer, and of all the many walks we’ve shared over the last two years. Thanks again, to all of you, for joining us every week… or as often as you can. It’s a great pleasure to share Sunday mornings with you!

Coming right up:

Soon: a walk to Sunnyside Beach, another LEAF tree-walk, a picnic, a special porch celebration, and a hike along the Rouge River. Maybe a trip to watch the dragon boat races. Summer! Let’s enjoy a bit of it, every week, so we can’t complain about how quickly it flew past.

See you soon!

Are you reading about our club for the first time?

Welcome. You really should walk with us! See you in the morning!
